California - 12,000 feet
At 14,494 feet above sea level, Mt. Whitney, located in the Inyo National Forest, is the highest elevation in California and the contiguous 48 states. Oddly enough, Death Valley is the lowest point in North America, less than 100 miles away. California has 12 mountains that rise above 14,000 feet above sea level, 10 of these are in the Sierra Navada’s, one in the Cascade Range and the last in the White Mountains (Shasta).
